A visit to the Koi store

We wanted to know more about how to take care of the koi, Japanese carp, in our pond, so it was worth a visit to the koi store in south San Jose.

There are rows and rows of plastic ponds with various sized koi, it was feeding time.

They get pretty hungry, these small ones are 5 for a $100!

They import them from Japan, the man told me the domestic koi do not grow very large. Only about 16 inches.
Sixteen inches sounds large to me, these were all about eight to ten inches and look bigger than the ones we have in the pond now!
Then I spotted the larger tanks and I knew what he meant by growing them big!
When you lean over the tank, they come right up to you - they must think they are getting a meal!
They really think they're getting fed now! Most of these are larger than Spike, I didn't even dare to ask how much they cost!
Back to ones that are more affordable, these arrived from Japan two weeks ago and are eight months old.

No fish were bought that day, but I received some great information on how to filter the pond water to get ready for some of these guys!
