The Tuolumne Cardboard Soapbox Car Race

Krista's High School Physics class was challenged to build a cardboard soapbox derby car. They could use wood for the axle, but all of the rest had to be cardboard. The only other requirements were that it had to hold a driver, roll downhill without pushing, and needed to travel at least 3 meters.

In the pits, the kids were checking out each other's cars and discussing the merits of each design. No two were alike!

Obviously, some of the design focused on style, not function. This car came complete with sidepipes - though it looks as though the numbers were an afterthought.
This car was beautiful, it was done by two girls who even made t-shirts to match their car. Well, they did get help from dad. With the car that is, not the shirts.
And off they went rolling down the hill, the Physics teacher timed and measured each run and the safety crew at the end of the course caught wayward cars in their net.
Krista and her teammate, Evelyn, were making some last minute adjustments to their axle in the pits. Is this a good sign or bad?
While they were working on their car, the winning car went the furthest down the hill. One of the girls broke a nail getting into it, but on the way back up the hill was heard to say "We kicked butt!" Which they did.
Krista asked Arthur, "just who do you think built that thing?"
While that minor controversy continued, one of the more innovative cars was ready to head down the course. It did quite well and crashed near the bottom of the course. No one was hurt.
Finally, it was Krista and Evelyn's turn. A few last minute adjustments, the axle appeared to be holding, and they were ready!
Unfortunately, as soon as Evelyn got in (the only car with a head first driver - do they get extra credit for that?) the front axle gave way.
Safety first and the driver got out without injuries. Time to take the car back to the pits for some quick repair.
A borrowed axle and wheels from a car that already made it down the hill (recycling is a good thing, should get extra credit!) and the car appears ready for another run.
In spite of Arthur's best efforts, and the borrowed axle - which held up - there was a fatal design flaw in their construction and the rear axle collapsed.
This time the only option was to take the entire car to the recycling bin as fast as possible.
As with all races, it is better to fail at the starting line than not to show up at all. They're the top team in my book and they didn't let their car keep them from having a great time.

Alex, the girls really could have used your assistance with this one!
