Searching for Amsterdam

We were driving back from Merced one day and saw a familiar name pop up on the GPS screen. Amsterdam, California! It's been eight years since we were in Amsterdam and we were wondering what our local Amsterdam looked like! So we looked it up on the map and decided to stop by and maybe order some poffertjes while we made a trip to Costco.

Make a left in Snelling - look for the ranch with the bison, make another left and you'll be in Amsterdam!  Unfortunately, our map showed that there wasn't much there - there.

We looked it up on Google Earth and discovered that Amsterdam seemed to be out in the middle of some farmer's field. How could that be? Amsterdam is a bustling, busy city with more than a million people!
Here's a Google Earth view of the REAL Amsterdam, not the California imitation. (There's really no need to draw a red circle here is there?)
So, off we went on our big adventure! Left turn at Snelling, look for the bison, cross the Merced River and as the GPS shows, we are in Amsterdam, California.
So here's a picture of us in Amsterdam!  (Berlynn stayed in the car, it smelled badly of farm animals.)
Not a poffertjes stand in sight. Perhaps Amsterdam is just a wide spot in the road?
Finally, something Dutch!  A farmer!  Turns out we had to ask him "Donde esta el pueblo Amsterdam?" Because he didn't speak Dutch or English!. (Yes, that is his bathroom he is towing.)
The farmer told us about a Calle Amsterdam - which we did find after a few more turns.
So here it is!  Amsterdam Road.
But where is Amsterdam? No zip code, no buildings, no poffertjes - just a wide spot in the road and an entry in the GPS.
Sure makes you kinda homesick for the real thing!
