A short week in NYC

A business trip provided an opportunity for Berlynn to join on a trip to New York City. She'd never seen the Big Apple before and as someone who lived there a lifetime ago, I was the perfect tour guide.
After landing early on Sunday morning after our red-eye, our room wasn't ready - but that was ok, we were ready to see the sights!

First, the best bargain in town - the free scenic Staten Island Ferry ride past the Statue of Liberty.

Then uptown to Macy's where we went shopping for a coat that was on Berlynn's Christmas Wish list.
It's been almost twenty years since I moved out of New York, but some things never change. Macy's still has wooden escalators.
After meeting one of our actor friends Laura H, for dinner that evening, we stopped by to look at Times Square which these days is quite safe and lit up like Las Vegas.
The next day was a work day for me. Berlynn went down to Canal Street on her own for some bargain hunting. After work we were supposed to see the taping of the David Letterman show (for which we had tickets) but it was cancelled due to the writers strike. So instead we met up with other actor friends for drinks and dinner. Leslie, Freddy, and Emily join us outside the House of Dublin.
For three years, Freddy has been telling Berlynn "When you come to New York, I'm taking you to Big Nick's for a slice." Berlynn has discovered the proper way of eating pizza with Freddy's help!
As we were saying our good-bye's outside of Big Nick's, in one of those "only in New York" moments, we ran into Alan Rickman and his wife right there on Broadway! Alan was in a Sierra Rep show earlier this Spring!
Finally my business meetings are done, and it was time to do some sightseeing. First, the new observation deck at the top of Rockefeller Center.
Then across Fifth Avenue to St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Where Berlynn lit a candle for her Grandma. Sorry about the blur, it was really dark and I didn't want to use the flash.
Then on to Trump Tower and a cup of coffee and a chance to rest feet that aren't used to walking all day in a big city.

We did a lot more walking on our ascot mission - don't know about ascots? Amazing how many New York stores don't either - ask us when you see us.

We stood in line at TKTS and got 1/2 price tickets to Mary Poppins. Even our actor friends were amazed at our luck.
Our last few hours in New York, we went back to Canal Street in search of one more bargain.
Another rest for aching feet, this time in Washington Square right by NYU.
I saw this shop on FoodTV, a little hole in the wall that makes Dutch Patat. Very good and the sauce was the real thing!
Finally it was time to take the subway back to the hotel and get ready for the long flight home. We had a great time, we're sure we'll be back.
