New deck railings

After nearly 20 years in the brutal California sun, the railings on the deck were, well, they were worn out. The wood was dried out and shrunken, some of the pieces were held in by a nail or two, so it was time to make the deck safe again with new railings.
But we wanted to preserve, or even improve the view. So we considered aircraft cabling (too expensive), glass panels (even more expensive), Trex (destroys the view) or just new redwood 2x2's like the old ones. Then we saw some metal fencing that we liked - not chicken wire, but similar and decided that was the look we wanted.
So we hired one of the neighbors, who is a carpenter to help out, and went to work early on a Saturday morning with the temperature predicted for the mid-nineties. (We were real glad that it wasn't over 100!)

We started out by removing the old railing which left a long drop to the driveway which Spike had to check out.

Here's the material we're going to put in. It's called kennel fencing. Yes, it does keep our wiener dogs from falling off the deck!
Of course we couldn't finish in one day, by the end of Saturday we had three panels in place and Stella was satisfied.
After all that physical labor I was ready for a hamburger so we went off to the Diamondback Grill where Berlynn had a glass of wine and I drank all of their iced tea.
Back at it early Sunday morning, I took off more old railing sections before Adrian came back to help out.
As we were working we kept moving the large umbrellas so that we were always in the shade, and we drank plenty of water all day long, it did get hot in the sun!
We have a couple of hours of work left, but here's what it looks like -we're pretty happy with it. Thanks to Adrian who came up with the system to put it all in place, and thanks to Rich and Jeanne for their help in getting this done!
